Shelley Reis at The Woods Farm

Updated: Sep 23, 2019

Shelley reis is a Wollongong Based photographer who has documented her stay at The Woods Farm through emotive and raw images and her own words.

Hey, my name is Shelley Reis and I am based in Wollongong, New South Wales where I live with my partner and two children. I am a self-taught documentary photographer focusing on childhood and family life in Australia. Aside from caring for my two children, Oscar who is 8 and Lola who is 5, I spend most of my time dedicated to personal photography projects as well as mentoring fellow photographers and photographing families. I am a crazy cat lady, in fact crazy animal lover in general,  which is one of the reasons I was so excited to stay at the Woods Farm!

I would describe my photography style as candid, raw and emotive - I favor real authentic moments full of energy and emotion rather than posed and polished 'perfection'. My main inspiration is the beauty that exists in the ordinary life. I am especially passionate about celebrating the ordinary by capturing the beautiful details of everyday life, which are often overlooked.

Our stay at The Woods Farm was amazing! We stayed in the "Farm House" which was perfectly located next to the pond. On arrival we were greeted with a basket of freshly collected eggs from the chickens and a bottle of organic local wine. The house was beautifully decked out with everything we needed. Though it was Winter time there was so much to do and so many places to explore that the kids never had any time to get bored.

Each morning the kids would wake up early so excited to visit and feed all the animals with the farmhands. The goats were hilarious and very bold so they were a favorite of the kids. My daughter loved checking the chicken coup for eggs each morning after feeding the chickens and patting the shaggy cows. Despite all the morning activity it still felt so calm and peaceful. We loved to just wander around the bush land surrounding the farm and there were always unexpected things to find and signs to read. I even got my cycle on when I borrowed a bike and helmet from the free bike shed. The kids bought their own bikes and my daughter finally had the confidence to take the training wheels off and ride around in the big open spaces which was an exciting milestone!

Each evening we lit a campfire and sat under the stars to eat dinner - it was pure bliss. The kids loved playing in the playground and sandpit and my son and partner played a few rounds of chess on the giant chess board. In the downtime when the parents needed a bit of R&R the kids really enjoyed watching Foxtel on the TV (which is a treat they don't normally have at home) and just a big added bonus that made our stay all the more relaxing.

We loved all the experiences at The Woods Farm but without a doubt the favorite activity was petting and feeding all the animals! We visited them multiple times a day to say hello.

Would you recommend the Woods Farm to others, why?

Absolutely! The Woods Farm has it all. It is perfectly located in a peaceful and secluded pocket of bush but is also so so close to all the activity of Jervis Bay and surrounds. There was just so much to do that we would never have had to leave the Farm, however when we did there were also so many things on offer in the local area (we took a whale watching cruise and visited the beach) and so many beaches to enjoy. It is perfect for a small family like ours but would be perfect for a large group looking for a weekend away! We stayed for 3 nights but could easily settle in and stay for much longer!
